Effective Sept. 10. 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is extending the validity of permanent resident cards to 36 months for individuals who have filed the Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. This change has been announced to adjust for longer processing times experienced by applicants.
Permanent resident cards are evidence of an individual’s permanent resident status. An individual’s permanent resident status is valid indefinitely. However, the cards, which are evidence of the lawful status, are valid for 10 years. Permanent residents file a Form I-90 in order to renew their card. The applicant for the replacement card receives a receipt notice which extends the validity of the expired card for 24 months. Effective Sept. 10, 2024, the I-90 receipt notices will automatically extend the validity of the cards for 36 months from the expiration date on the card. Permanent residents may present the expired card and Form I-90 receipt notices as evidence of their continued permanent resident status for any reason that the resident card may be necessary, including employment verification, travel and driver’s license renewals.
If an individual no longer has their resident card and needs evidence of their status, the applicant may request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office in order to obtain an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunication (ADIT) stamp, which is evidence in lieu of the resident card. An individual contacts the USCIS Contact Center in order to schedule the appointment.
